This historic Seattle home was designed by the well-known architect Roland Terry. I created the sculpture to be hung on the wall next to the entry door.
Detail of the sculpture shows radiating pattern of rusted steel tubing, redwood and stained glass.

This artwork originated as an undefined commission donated to the Seattle Childrens Hospital for their annual fundraising auction. The winning bidder requested a sculptural piece to hang on a wall adjacent to their front door. The photos show the resulting piece, roughly 6’ in diameter, made of steel, redwood and colored glass. The glass was a lucky accident. After finding it in the glass supplier’s warehouse, I was informed my timing was perfect. They had received the glass by mistake and were about to return it to the manufacturer.

The recipe for the rusted finish included rock salt that was to be washed off. I liked the crusty effect, so I sealed in the granules with a lacquer finish -- very organic.
